On Friday, Oct. 1, at 5:30 p.m., Vermont Artisan Designs in Brattleboro, VT, is hosting a discussion about the history and future of craft in Vermont. The panel discussion, along with the opening of a special month-long exhibit honoring the work of living older artisans, will help kick off a local celebration of the first American Craft Week.

Among the artisans invited to participate in the discussion that includes looking back and looking ahead are potters Malcolm Wright, Ken Pick and Willie Finkel; weavers Carol Schnabel and Rosie Schulick; and glass artisans Robert and Caitlin Burch.

The Burches are father and daughter and offer a great perspective on what it's like to develop a craft, what it's like to grow up around it and the decision to continue a family tradition.

Wright and Pick have been long considered two of Vermont's finest potters. Finkel is still in his teens but has decided that pottery will be his career.

Schnabel is a long-time weaver and Schulick is just starting out, but has already developed a fine line of work.

The special exhibit is expected to include works by potters Wright and Pick, weavers Schnabel and Lucy Gratwick, glass artisans Robert Burch and Josh Simpson, wood turner Alan Stirt and blacksmith Ian Eddy.

The special show is part of the Vermont State of Craft celebration and also helps kick-off the first national American Craft Week sponsored by CRAFT (Craft Retailers and Artists for Tomorrow).
